Second driver charged over street race at Auburn, NSW

A second driver has been charged after police allegedly detected two vehicles travelling more than 100km/h over the speed limit at the weekend.

About 1.50am on Saturday 7 December 2019, officers attached to the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command detected two white Subaru Impreza WRX’s allegedly engaged in a street race on the M4 at Auburn.

Police conducted a speed check of one of the vehicles which was allegedly detected at 194km/h in 90km/h zone.

That vehicle turned off at the James Ruse Drive exit and was stopped by police shortly after.

The driver, a 24-year-old man from Merrylands was charged with a number of driving offences. His licence was suspended, and number plates confiscated.

Following inquiries, police attended a home address in Werrington Downs about 9pm on Sunday 8 December 2019, where a form of demand was placed on the owner of the second Subaru.

Police issued the 25-year-old woman with a Field Court Attendance Notice for the following offences organise, promote race between vehicles, drive recklessly/furiously or speed manner dangerous, and class A motor vehicle exceed speed over 45km/h.

Her licence was suspended, and her number plates were confiscated

Both are due to appear to at Burwood Local Court on Tuesday 14 January 2020.

Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy of Traffic & Highway Patrol Command said that this event proves the lengths police will go to in order to prosecute poor road user behaviour.

“With the states road toll at 332, people should not take driving for granted.”

“Those that put themselves, their passengers, and other road users at risk will be prosecuted and put off our roads very quickly.”

“This close to Christmas, drivers, riders, cyclists, and pedestrians need to consider not only themselves, but their families, and stay safe on our roads.”
