A second man has been charged as investigations continue into a critical incident in Sydney’s south earlier this week.
Just before 10am on Tuesday (12 July 2022), officers from South Sydney Police Area Command stopped a Ford Falcon – reportedly stolen earlier this month from West Pennant Hills – on Elliot Avenue, Erskineville.
The front male passenger got out and fled and was pursued by police, while the Ford was allegedly driven at an officer, who discharged their firearm.
The passenger, a 38-year-old man, was arrested shortly after, following a foot pursuit. Police searched the man and allegedly located cash, which was seized for forensic examination
The Ford was located at a service station on the Hume Highway, Croydon. Two crime scenes were established and forensically examined.
The driver, a 36-year-old man, was arrested and taken to hospital under police guard.
The older man was taken to Mascot Police Station and charged with multiple offences. He remains before the court.
The younger man remains in hospital and was today (Thursday 17 July 2022), charged with use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, assault police officer in the execution of duty without actual bodily harm and take and drive conveyance without consent of owner.
During a bedside court hearing he was formally refused bail to appear before Newtown Local Court on Tuesday 9 August 2022.
A critical incident team from Sydney City Police Area Command is investigating all circumstances surrounding the incident. That investigation will be subject to an independent review.
