Securing Our Skies And Seas

RAAF

In a significant display of collaboration, personnel from the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) engaged with their counterparts from the Royal Australian Air Force’s 92 Wing at RMAF Butterworth for Operation Gateway.

The engagement included a series of subject-matter expert workshops and a unique opportunity to examine each other’s aircraft, including the P-8A Poseidon and the CN-235 Maritime Patrol Variant.

The collaboration was an integral part of Operation Gateway, which underscores the importance of domain awareness in the North Indian Ocean and South China Sea.

Stationed at RAAF Base Edinburgh and deploying to RMAF Butterworth for the operation, 11 Squadron operates the P-8A Poseidon, a state-of-the-art maritime patrol aircraft that enhances surveillance capabilities.

This joint effort significantly contributes to the preservation of regional security and stability in south-east Asia, a mission that both nations take seriously.

Officer Commanding 92 Wing Detachment Alpha Squadron Leader Andrew Bartlett said the collaboration with RMAF not only strengthened RAAF’s operational capabilities, but also deepened the mutual understanding of regional challenges.

“Together, we are enhancing our ability to respond effectively to security threats in the maritime domain,” Squadron Leader Bartlett said.

“These interactions are crucial as they help us to share our knowledge and experience while continuing to promote and nurture our strong relationships, [which are] essential for future operations.”

The longstanding Malaysia-Australia Joint Defence Program celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2021. This program fosters a strong, enduring partnership between the two nations, facilitating military collaboration, and cultural and strategic exchanges.

The workshops held at RMAF Butterworth provided an invaluable platform for both RMAF and RAAF personnel to share insights, operational experiences and best practices in maritime operations.

By engaging in such collaborative activities, both air forces reaffirmed their commitment to working together in addressing regional security challenges.

During his visit to Operation Gateway, Deputy Chief of Joint Operations for the ADF Major General Hugh McAslan said the operation has been a long standing and deep relationship between Australia and Malaysia.

“To collectively work together for a secure and prosperous region benefits Australia and Malaysia, and the region as a whole,” Major General McAslan said.

“Through initiatives like Operation Gateway, the ADF and RMDF jointly contribute to stability in the region, and enhance the collective ability to respond to emerging threats.

“This partnership exemplifies the ADF’s commitment to working alongside regional partners to maintain a secure and resilient maritime environment for all nations that rely on these vital sea routes.”
