The Rockliff Liberal Government is working hard to improve road safety around Tasmania through a range of initiatives.
As part of this plan, our Community Road Safety Grants Program is now open to creative ideas to help reduce the trauma of road crashes and save lives, with the Government dedicating up to $200,000 from the Road Safety Levy.
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Michael Ferguson, said the Community Road Safety Grants provided funding for innovative grassroots solutions to local road safety issues through education and support.
“This program lets local communities put forward solutions to local road safety issues that they see in their community,” Mr Ferguson said.
“It is about local organisations telling us what they think will help bring down the number of crashes and reduce the pain and suffering on our local roads.
“This year 28 people have been killed on Tasmanian roads with another 258 seriously injured.
“This tragic loss of life and injury extends well beyond those directly affected and is felt throughout the community,” he said.
Local councils, community organisations, schools and Tasmanian research institutions are invited to apply for grants across two categories with funding of up to $5,000 available for small grants and up to $35,000 for medium/large grants.
Mr Ferguson said that since the program began in 2015 more than $1 million had been invested into different local initiatives.
Previous projects funded through Community Road Safety Grants include road safety programs to encourage safe driving around schools, motorcycle safety programs and safer speeds campaigns.
“By tapping into local knowledge, we are empowering local groups to take the lead in engaging with their neighbours and spreading the road safety message,” Mr Ferguson said.
“Keeping our roads safe needs everyone’s commitment and that is why we are helping local community groups play their part,” he said.
