Northern Territory Police have seized a large quantity of illicit substances destined for a remote community.
On 6 March 2024, local police from Gapuwiyak apprehended a vehicle travelling into Arnhem Land.
Upon a search of the vehicle, police uncovered over 100 kilograms of kava for the sole purpose of supplying in an indigenous community.
It is alleged that the kava was prepared and packaged into smaller quantities in preparation for the quick distribution in the communities.
Sergeant Muchow said, “This result is a great example of how collaborative work between local Police and community stakeholders have been able to identify the alleged offending and enabling officers to act swiftly.
“Officers will continue to target those who seek to gain benefit from the distribution of illicit substances in our remote communities and ensure that offenders are held fully accountable for their actions.
“The supply of illicit substances into remote communities have devastating impact on the lives of people in vulnerable communities.”
Two males have been arrested and charged with:
- Supply Kava – Commercial quantity
- Supply schedule 2 substance – Indigenous community
- Possess proceeds of crime
