Bayside Council is looking to expand its existing services for seniors to include a volunteer home gardening program that will help older residents stay active in their home gardens.
“Many of our seniors are passionate gardeners, a program like this will help them keep their gardens looking beautiful,” Mayor Dr Christina Curry said.
Council is investigating the feasibility of supporting a team of volunteer gardeners to go out and work one-on-one with seniors in their gardens.
These ‘Garden Mates’ would offer friendship and support for seniors as they work with them on low maintenance gardening projects so they can keep enjoying their home gardens.
Gardening provides gentle exercise, sunshine, and mental and emotional stimulation. But as we age, some gardening jobs like bending down to weed, getting up again, reaching up to prune and lifting heavy weights become hard.
Council already provides several services for seniors including:
- Senior Centres and Groups
- ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ support services through My Agreed Care
- ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Library Services
