The Palaszczuk Government is again preparing to celebrate the valuable contribution of older Queenslanders with $100,000 in funding for events and activities to be held in local communities during Queensland Seniors Week 2019.
Minister for Seniors Coralee O’Rourke said community organisations and local councils could now apply for a grant of up to $1000 to host their events and activities during Queensland Seniors Week.
“Seniors Week, which will run from August 17 – 25, is all about celebrating the lives and contributions of older Queenslanders,” Mrs O’Rourke said.
“I am incredibly proud the Palaszczuk Government continues to provide this funding, which last year supported 100 events and activities during Queensland Seniors Week.
“We have asked Council on the Ageing Queensland (COTA Queensland) to deliver this important awareness raising week on behalf of the Queensland Government.”
This year the theme of Queensland Seniors Week is again Celebrating a Queensland for All Ages.
Mrs O’Rourke said last year there were more than 870 registered events, including the 100 that received Palaszczuk Government funding, held as part of Seniors Week.
“These events included a popular Seniors Ballet Class with world-famous ballet dancer Li Cunxin, Mayoral morning teas and awards and arts and craft events,” she said.
“I’m really looking forward to taking part in Seniors Week this year, with more exciting events and activities to be hosted right across the state, including rural and regional areas.”
COTA Queensland Chief Executive Mark Tucker-Evans is anticipating 2019 will be the biggest Seniors Week yet.
“During the week hundreds of event organisers will facilitate events and activities providing opportunities for people to learn and share in new experiences, discover programs and service which support a range of needs including reducing social isolation,” Mr Tucker-Evans said.
“The week provides a great opportunity Queenslanders of all ages to connect with older members of our community.
Applications for grants open March 4 and closes March 31.
