A tactile exhibition that engages people with low vision or blindness in science will be on show, free to the public, on Saturday 26 October.
‘Sensory Science’, a collaboration between the Lions Eye Institute and Monash University’s Biomedicine Discovery Institute, is a tactile exhibition that will be open 11am to 3pm at UWA IQX on Broadway, Nedlands on Saturday.
Many of the exhibits are the work of Dr Erica Tandori, a legally-blind artist. Dr Tandori has a PhD in visual art and ophthalmology, in which she used art to articulate the processes of her own vision loss caused by juvenile macular degeneration. She has worked with Lions Eye Institute researchers to develop a range of eye-related exhibits, and these will be complemented by the work of renowned Perth sculptor Robert Hitchcock.
Visitors will also have access to a range of fascinating displays, including 3D models of viruses such as smallpox and Zika, and a variety of molecules, antibodies and amino acids. They will also hear from the exhibition’s founder, Professor Jamie Rossjohn, ARC Australian Laureate Fellow.
