Set sail at iconic Darwin Lions Beer Can Regatta

NT Government

Expertly designed boats made out of cans – and the teams trying to sail them – will provide hours of entertainment at the iconic Darwin Lions Beer Can Regatta on Sunday, 16 July.

Making the most of our Dry Season Weather, Tropical landscape and Top End Back drop, the Regatta puts our lifestyle under the sun and sits on the Territory events calendar as a must for all locals and visitors

Established in 1974, thousands of people flock to the regatta at Darwin’s Mindil Beach to watch teams compete for the best boat design and the fastest boat, before the Battle for Mindil takes place at the end of the day. Boats can be made out of cans, plastic bottles and milk cartons, and there is a special category for children.

On the beach, revellers can participate in a range of activities including a tug-of-war, thong throwing, iron man and woman, and a children’s sandcastle competition. Budding fashion designers can take part in ‘Fashions on the Beach’, where competitors will show off their outfits made out of cans or cartons.

The annual event, which is supported by Territory Labor Government through Northern Territory Major Events Company, raises funds for various Territory charities and not-for-profit organisations. This year it will support CareFlight.
