Minor to moderate flooding is expected across the Northern Rivers over the coming days due to the current severe weather event.
Up to 180mm is expected today and tomorrow along the coastal fringe with more intense rain tomorrow, then the low should move south and off shore.
The NSW Police have activated the Ocean Shores Country Club as an Evacuation Centre due to potential flooding and landslips.
They say residents should be prepared to follow advice and evacuate early if told to do so.
“I urge Byron Shire residents keep themselves informed with the Bureau of Meteorology and SES updates, local ABC Radio and Council’s Emergency Dashboard,” Byron Shire Council’s Director Infrastructure Services, Phil Holloway said.
“Weather events like this can compromise the emergency roadworks we’ve been doing over the last month, so we are asking people to take extra care on the roads and avoid travel in the hinterland areas if possible.”
“It’s also important to note that roads could be closed without warning,” he said.
“We realise this can be frustrating, but the safety of our community is the highest priority,” Mr Holloway said.
