SharkSmart hits road for regional tour

The shark trailer is a hit

A trailer full of shark science and facts is along the NSW coast to share the key findings of the NSW Shark Management Strategy, Dr Natalie Moltschaniwskyj, NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) Director Fisheries Research, said today.

“The will kick off today at ‘Surfest Newcastle Pro’ at Merewether Beach and is a chance to show the public our world class research and shark mitigation trials of the NSW Government’s five-year, $16 million Shark Management Strategy,” Dr Moltschaniwskyj said.

“The touring shark education program will enable coastal communities to get a good look at the Strategy and learn more about the important role of sharks, while also learning what steps they can take to minimise their chances of a shark interaction. The ocean is a wild place, and that’s why we love it, but there are things we can all do to maximise our safety while we enjoy the ocean.

“The key focus of the Strategy was to trial and research new technology to increase protection for beachgoers while minimising harm to sharks and other marine life.

“DPI has been trialling a range of different shark detection and deterrence measures such as drones, helicopters, SMART drumlines, tagging and shark listening stations. In addition, the Annual Grants and PhD programs provided opportunities for new and emerging technology and research to be developed and supported by experts outside DPI.

“The SharkSmart roadshow event is a great opportunity for our coastal communities to get out and about and see what our Shark Management Strategy is all about, and as always, how to be SharkSmart, and check out our brand new SharkSmart Instagram channel.

“The interactive trailer will showcase shark research biology as well as shark jaws and videos showing our incredible drone footage.”
