Shellharbour City Council is expanding its Cadet, Apprentice and Traineeship (CAT) program, creating job opportunities and a talent pipeline for specialised roles.
The first stage of Shellharbour City Council’s expanded CAT program will see nine new roles created over the next two years, with a focus on Council’s Open Spaces Team.
Recruitment for four positions will commence shortly:
• 2 x horticulture apprenticeships
• 1 x sports turf apprenticeship
• 1 x horticulture apprenticeship
Recruitment for five positions will be recruited to commence in January 2025:
• 3 x horticulture apprenticeships
• 2 x trainee position
CAT positions are jobs that combine work and structured training. Participants acquire valuable on-the-job experience and skills training while earning an income.
CAT programs are particularly useful for occupations where there is an identified skills gap.
Shellharbour City Mayor Chris ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾r said the program boosted job opportunities and provided wide-ranging benefits for the community.
“Participants improve their skills in a hands-on environment, gaining valuable industry experience while acquiring nationally recognised qualifications.
“Even the process of applying for these roles is a wonderful learning opportunity. Even if you are not successful, the experience will help you with future applications,” Mayor ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾r said.
Shellharbour City Council’s CEO Mike Archer said that the expanded CAT program would allow Council to grow its skills base, assist with business continuity, and expand mentoring opportunities for existing staff.
It would also enhance the organisation’s presence as an employer of choice across tertiary education organisations in multiple disciplines.
The Mayor and Councillors unanimously supported the expansion of Council’s CAT program earlier this year.
“I am extremely proud of the elected Council’s unanimous support of the creation of CAT positions and the wonderful prospects they provide, especially for young people,” Mr Archer said.
“Expanding Council’s CAT program is a sound recruitment strategy that will assist with business continuity and future proofing.”
