Somerville residents will soon be able to enjoy a modern and integrated space for all ages: the Somerville Active Recreation Hub!
From April to June 2019, Mornington Peninsula Shire consulted with the local community and key stakeholders to hear their thoughts and ideas on the elements they would like to see at a brand-new Active Recreation Hub in Somerville.
At its Council Meeting on Tuesday 6 November 2019, Council adopted the Somerville Active Recreation Hub Concept.
In January 2020, Mornington Peninsula Shire received $742,500 in grant funding through the state government’s Growing Suburbs Fund towards the $1.48M project.
Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor Sam Hearn thanked the many community members who provided their thoughts online or at drop-in sessions.
“In the coming months, the project will enter into the detailed design phase with input from key stakeholders. It is anticipated construction will commence in the 2020/21 financial year.
Watson Ward Councillor Julie Morris said “we have seen a rise in community interest for more diverse sporting, recreation and play opportunities on the Peninsula.
“We have worked in consultation with the community to ensure innovative and engaging recreation elements are included in the new Activity Hub.
“We look forward to bringing better services to our Somerville community and surrounds. Together with the Somerville Recreation Centre and sport fields, the Somerville Active Recreation Hub will transform this area into an active precinct,” concluded Cr Morris.
BACKGROUND
The Active Recreation Hub for Somerville would consist of designated BMX, scooter, bike and skate components and recreational features such as a multi-use court, parkour equipment and trampolines.
After undertaking a thorough site selection process, Mornington Peninsula Shire has determined the most suitable location to build the Hub is Fruit Growers Reserve (Edward Street side).
This site is centrally located close to schools, offers good passive surveillance, linkages to public transport and pedestrian connections, access to public toilets, as well as connections with other community facilities and services.
