Mornington Peninsula Shire’s Community Animal Shelter and Pound is proud to launch aFree Dog and Cat Desexing initiative aimed at local pet owners over 60-years old. Under the new initiative, Seniors Card holders who have a dog or cat registered* with the Shire can get their furry companion desexed for free.
Our Community Animal Shelter and Pound has been caring for animals for more than 30 years, so we know first-hand the important role your pets play in your life, providing unconditional love, company, and happiness. That’s why we’re committed to helping you take care of them in the best possible way – particularly at a time when many pet owners are doing it tough.
Benefits of desexing your furry friend
Desexing your male or female dog or cat has many health and wellbeing benefits, including:
- improving their life expectancy and reducing the risk of certain health issues, such as reproductive diseases and certain types of cancer.
- preventing unwanted litters, helping to control pet overpopulation.
- reducing behavioural problems, like aggression, wandering and offensive sexual habits.
Plus, the annual cost of registering your pet with the Shire is significantly cheaper once they’ve been desexed!
Take advantage of our free desexing initiative
If you hold a Seniors Card and your pet is registered with the Shire, you’re automatically eligible to access our free desexing program. All you need to do is contact our Animal Shelter team on 5950 1838 and our friendly team will talk you through next steps.
This program is being delivered through allocated funding, so it will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. We encourage you to get in early to avoid disappointment.

*Good news, you can still take advantage of this free offer to secure the wellbeing of your four-legged companion if you hold a Seniors Card. Simply contact our Animal Shelter Team on 5950 1838 and they’ll guide you through both the registration and desexing process with the utmost care.
