Shooting Australia has today announced a 61 member national team who will represent Australia in the 2023 Oceania Championships (OCH) to be held in Brisbane from 30 October to 6 November.
The OCH is the premier shooting event in the Oceania region and, this year, will provide opportunities for athletes to win Paris 2024 Olympic Quota places for their ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Federation across the pistol, rifle and shotgun disciplines.
With this national team being the largest of its kind, Shooting Australia’s objectives when considering selections in accordance with the selection criteria focussed on how to maximise the number of Olympic quota places won, and how to provide elite and pre-elite Australian athletes with exposure to high quality competition that will help to accelerate their development for 2024 and beyond.
Of today’s team announcement, Shooting Australia’s High Performance Manager, Kathryn Periac, says “It is a privilege to be leading the Australian Team to the 2023 Oceania Championships, which is a critical steppingstone for our athletes towards the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. We have selected the best Shooting talent in Australia to compete for Olympic quotas in every discipline and event. The outcomes from this Oceania Championships will play a significant role in shaping the size and composition of the Australian Shooting Team in Paris. Our athletes have been very focussed in their preparations and will be well-supported by Shooting Australia’s ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Coaches and support staff, leading to strong performances in Brisbane at the end of the month.”
Whilst Shooting Australia’s primary focus is to secure as many Olympic quotas as possible (to add to the quota that has already been secured in Women’s Trap), Chief Executive Officer Adam Sachs says, “Significant additional competition opportunities, outside of those who will be competing for Olympic quotas, have also been created providing athletes with access to high-quality international competition here in Australia. As the host of this year’s Oceania Championships, Shooting Australia is grateful for the opportunity and is investing heavily in the event’s success. We have also worked closely with our Member Organisations and are extremely grateful for the support they are providing to the Australian Team members who are not eligible to compete for Olympic quotas. These athletes will continue to be important contributors to the success and sustainability of Shooting in the Oceania region, now and into the future, and may be part of the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Team. I wish all of the Australian athletes the best of luck in their final weeks of preparation for the Championships”.
The pistol and rifle events will be held at the Brisbane International Shooting Centre and the shotgun events at the Brisbane Gun Club.
Shooting Australia extends its thanks to the large number of officials and volunteers who will be significantly contributing to the success of the 2023 Oceania Championships.
