This week Tasmanians are marking Legacy Week and I urge people to donate generously and support the outstanding work of this organisation.
Legacy Week runs from 28 August to 3 September 2021 and fundraising this week will help Legacy support about 43,000 Australians, including widows in their senior years, younger widows with children and veterans’ dependents with a disability.
Legacy Week began in 1942 and is also known as Badge Week. The badges are an iconic token of appreciation for donations made by members of the public.
Founded in Hobart from the Remembrance Club established by Major General Sir John Gellibrand in 1923, Legacy is a voluntary organisation supported by veterans, servicemen and women, and volunteers drawn from all walks of life.
The support provided to Legacy allows for critical support to veterans and their families and is dedicated to caring for the families of fallen or seriously injured veterans.
The services offered by Legacy include counselling, special housing, medical, advocacy and social support to families and also helps with education fees and resources.
Legacy fundraisers will be out in force on Thursday, Friday and Saturday this week and I encourage all Tasmanians to support Legacy’s work and buy a badge so they can continue to support veterans and their families.
