Singapore jets wrap up in Western Australia

Department of Defence

After four months and three rotations of two different models of aircraft, the Republic of Singapore (RSAF) Extended Fighter Detachment (EFD) concluded on October 18 at RAAF Base Pearce, WA.

Running from June 24, the EFD involved the RSAF’s F-16s and F-15SGs, and provided the RSAF air and ground crew realistic training opportunities using WA airspace, base and ranges.

Senior ADF Officer of RAAF Base Pearce Wing Commander Greg Porche said despite the EFD’s impact on current operational norms, all RAAF Base Pearce personnel and stakeholders rose to the challenge.

“There were many hurdles to overcome, but all personnel demonstrated strong agility in adapting to the EFD’s needs,” Wing Commander Porche said.

“The increased complexity of aerodrome and airspace operations provided a valuable opportunity to test our air base capabilities, mixing fast-jet operations with ab initio flight training and assessing the increased load on air base support functions.”

RSAF Deputy Head Air Operations Colonel Anthony Wong said the EFD reflected the close and long-standing defence relations between Singapore and Australia.

“As a small country with limited training airspace, overseas training detachments enable the RSAF to overcome Singapore’s airspace constraints and conduct realistic, high-end training,” Colonel Wong said.

“The EFD provided valuable training for our air and ground crew, as well as opportunities for our RSAF personnel to network with RAAF counterparts and engage with the local community.

“We are very grateful for the support, friendship and opportunity to be able to train in Australia.”

Three community days were held offering members from Bullsbrook, the City of Swan and students from nearby schools the opportunity to see the aircraft up close and engage with RAAF and RSAF personnel.

Wing Commander Porche said the RSAF EFD provided many positive outcomes for RAAF Base Pearce.

“The RSAF personnel went out of their way to ensure the success of the EFD operations and demonstrated a strong willingness to engage with the local community,” Wing Commander Porche said.

“We now have an increased understanding of how to support RSAF fast-jet operations and planning considerations, further enhancing our already strong partnership with the RSAF.”
