As part of global International Women’s Day celebrations, City of Darwin’s youth programs team will be holding a free, drop-in skate and paint session this Sunday.
Acting Lord Mayor Kim Farrar said the International Women’s Day Skate & Paint event presented an opportunity for young people of all skating skill levels to get together for an active and creative afternoon, with skilled skaters on deck to provide support and encouragement.
“International Women’s Day is a timely reminder of the social, economic, cultural and political contributions and achievements of women worldwide, including those from Darwin,” Ms Farrar said.
“Despite significant progress in recent decades, gender inequality and gender discrimination remain an issue for women of all ages.
“It is wonderful to see a program specifically tailored to providing a safe and supportive environment for skate park users of all disciplines to learn new skills, hone their abilities, and enjoy time together,” she said.
Event Producer Hannah Illingworth said she was honoured to work on an event that created a safer space for females and allies to practise painting and skating.
“It can be intimidating showing up to a skate park for the first time, especially if you are just starting out,” Ms Illingworth said.
“Whether it is your first time or you are a regular, come down for some skating and painting fun with friendly people.”
The event will be held from 3-5pm at Leanyer Skate Park on Sunday 12 March and is recommended for ages 12 and older.
