Ski Way Park promenade renewal work completed

The Shellharbour City community can look forward to new and upgraded facilities at Ski Way Park just in time for aquatics season, with the renewal of the promenade and construction of a new kayak ramp.

In 2016, severe storms resulted in the collapse of the pre-existing concrete promenade, prompting a long-term redesign of the space to better withstand the elements.

The completed promenade was constructed with marine grade timber, supported by a fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) boardwalk. The promenade includes a rock armour protection underneath to protect the existing retaining walls and to prevent erosion.

The $1M project also consists of retaining wall capping adjacent to the promenade and a new kayak access ramp.

Shellharbour mayor Marianne Saliba said that residents would enjoy the renewed promenade for many years to come.

‘The development of this project has involved extensive community consultation and collaboration with a range of skilled professionals and groups to maximise the promenade’s durability, and the overall usability of the area,” Cr Saliba said.

“Through ensuring the quality and sustainability of outdoor public spaces, we can make sure that they can be enjoyed by the community well into the future,” she said.

The project design was developed through extensive collaboration with marine engineers, DPI Fisheries, the environmental management team, Council services department and assets department.

A ‘Review of Environmental Factors’ report was prepared and its recommendations were included in the final design.

The renewal of the Ski Way Park playground, the addition of a water bubbler with dog bowl, and a new fish cleaning table have also been planned for the area, and are expected to be completed this financial year.
