Skip bins and waste pickups for Smithtown flood waste
The village of Smithtown has been hit particularly hard by this week’s flood. It is hoped that flood water will recede enough on Friday morning to allow the clean up to begin.
Kempsey Shire Council with the assistance of NSW Rural Fire Service and Fire & Rescue NSW are providing waste disposal and clean up support.
Skip bins
Dedicated skip bins will be provided for Smithtown residents whose properties have been affected by the floods to dispose of their flood waste.
Cleanaway will place skip bins throughout the village once the floodwaters recede, hopefully as soon as midday Friday 1 April.
Your cooperation is appreciated at this time to ensure the flood waste is removed as quickly and efficiently as possible.
What you need to do
- Put flood impacted waste on the kerbside now
- Use skip bins in the first instance for faster removal
- Do not overfill skip bins above the rim
- Keep your kerbside and road way clear of vehicles to allow access for kerb-side pick up.
It is not clear at this stage when skip bins will be collected as the access to the Crescent Head Waste Management Centre is blocked by floodwaters.
Kerb-side collection
Council will provide kerb-side collection of flood waste for items that cannot fit within the skip bin.
Smithtown residents are asked to place flood waste in the skip bins or on the kerb-side in preparation for the clean-up.
Flood waste only
Only flood waste is to be placed in skip bins or on kerbside.
No construction waste, organics, perishables, construction materials, asbestos or hazardous materials (including gas bottles and chemicals) can be placed in these bins.
Skip bins will be labelled ‘Flood Waste’ and residents with properties not affected by floodwater are asked to refrain from using these skip bins.
Wash down and clean up help
NSW Rural Fire Service and Fire & Rescue NSW are expected to be in Smithtown from Friday and available to provide wash-down and clean-up assistance for residents with flood damaged properties.
If you do not live in Smithtown
Placement of skip bins in other areas of the Lower Macleay is being considered as waters recede.
Any resident who has been impacted by the March 2022 floods and needs waste disposal, wash down or clean-up assistance outside of Smithtown village please call NSW SES on 13 25 00 to register your property.
