The State’s newest Child and Family Learning Centre is about to welcome its first families through the doors in Sorell.
The Centre is one of six state-of-the-art Centres that are being delivered across the State, providing more opportunities for our young ones and improving education and wellbeing outcomes.
Minister for Education, Jo Palmer toured the new Centre, known as ‘The Nest’, which is the fourth to be delivered since 2018 and due to open on May 1, 2024.
“This $28 million commitment to build six new child and family learning centres across Tasmania is delivering significant improvements in the way our young children learn and grow.
“The fantastic new spaces will support our local families here in the Sorell and Tasman Local Government Areas.
“Our CFLCs are much more than physical structures – they offer early learning and wellbeing services in the one place to support families with young children.
“Like all of our CFLCs, The Nest is community-driven with local community members actively involved in the exciting process of designing and shaping the centre.
“Having the new Centre built next to Sorell Primary School makes the day-to-day school run that much easier for local families, and we are currently working to identify further opportunities for childcare options in the future.
“The final two new CFLCs in Kingborough and Glenorchy are currently under construction, nearing completion and will open to families in the coming months, taking the total number of CFLCs operating across Tasmania to 18.
“We know that children thrive when they have supportive environments in their early years which is why we have recently committed to building a further four new Child and Family Learning Centres at Huonville, Smithton, Longford, and Scottsdale.
“I look forward to seeing The Nest continue to grow and come alive when its doors officially open to families.”
Quotes attributable to Philip De Jong Manager Construction Fairbrother Southern Tasmania:
“Delivering The Nest Child and Family Learning Centre as part of the redevelopment of Sorell School has been a fantastic project for Fairbrother.
“Many of our staff and contractors working on this project are from the Sorell region, so it’s rewarding for them to know the work they’ve done will result in great new facilities and services to support their local community.”
