Social Poker Is Back

Tasmanian Government

Social poker tournaments have recommenced in Tasmania.

Minister for Finance, Nic Street said the Tasmanian Government has delivered on its commitment to bring back social poker to venues across the state.

“Under our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future we committed to ensuring social poker tournaments can be played in Tasmania, without wagering and with low entry fees,” Minister Street said.

“Following my direction to the Tasmanian Liquor and Gaming Commission in July, they yesterday declared social poker an exempt game under the Gaming Control Act 1993.”

Declaring social poker an exempt game removes it from the regulatory regime of the Act, however safeguards remain in place.

“Tournaments can be played subject to specified conditions” Minister Street said.

“The conditions are in place to ensure tournaments are conducted responsibly without adding layers of regulatory oversight for what is a genuine social activity.

“The Government has worked with the social poker community to ensure the conditions meet the expectations of players.”
