Rockhampton Regional Council has recently undertaken some park and playground updates across the Region.

Parks, Sports and Public Spaces Councillor Cherie Rutherford said parks and playgrounds are always a family favourite and enjoyed by the community.

“It is great to see our smaller but still very popular playgrounds receiving some upgrades over the last few weeks,” Cr Rutherford said.

“Most recently, Ollie Smith Park saw the construction of a footpath through the park.

“The footpath allows more access and is now a dedicated track for the community to enjoy a nice walk or run.

“Haigh Park, across from the Rockhampton Base Hospital also saw the installation of a footpath allowing full access for all community members and hospital patients and visitors.

“This is a beautiful open area where people can sit and take in the fresh air.

“With the installation of a footpath, hospital patients and visitors, the elderly, those in wheelchairs, on crutches or those who find it difficult walk on or can’t access unpaved areas, can now do so.

“It makes me so happy to see something so simple like a footpath create an accessible space for all to use and enjoy.

“In Gracemere, Bill Birch Park saw the installation of a new retaining wall under the shade shelter to improve the safety of the playground.

“The playground also received 18 tonnes of new locally sourced playground quality sand.

“Eddie Baker Park in Norman Gardens received a complete replacement of the play equipment which has already become a family favourite.

“The playground was at end of life and saw the installation of slides, climbing ropes, monkey bars and a few other fun pieces.

“Joyce Harding Park in Frenchville also saw the installation of new play equipment called the BLOQX4, which was the first of its kind in Queensland.

“This piece has iconic geometric shaped blocks that encourage climbing challenges and games for children at different climbing levels.

“The new equipment is the first of several upgrades planned at the park over the next couple of years.

“Council is always looking at ways to improve these public areas for our community.

“We love seeing the community spend time at our facilities and see the smiles the areas bring to many families.

“Be sure to get out and about over the break and check out the parks and playgrounds. Have a wonderful holiday season!”
