Four drivers were detected with alcohol or drugs in their system during a recent traffic operation around school zones.
Operation Return to School was conducted during the peak drop-off and pick-up times and saw a highly visible police presence in and around school zones across the state on Monday 30 and Tuesday 31 January.
Police visited 269 schools state-wide and obtained the following results:
- A 54-year-old woman from Karatta recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.107
- A 47-year-old Port Augusta West man tested positive for methamphetamine
- A 43-year-old Millswood man tested positive for methamphetamine
- A 32-year-old O’Sullivan Beach woman tested positive for cannabis
Police issued 68 expiation notices for various traffic offences, including parking and stopping offences, speeding, mobile phone use and licence and registration offences.
Six vehicles were also defected during the operation.
Superintendent Bob Gray, Officer in Charge, Traffic Support Branch, said children and young people are at risk in road environments around schools because they are smaller and less visible to drivers.
“It is especially important that drivers obey traffic, parking and stopping rules around schools to ensure the safety of children making their way to and from school.
“It is often a busy time of day for families, and can be stressful, but drivers need to make safety a priority.”
