Someone’s trash is another’s treasure

The nation’s biggest sustainability and community event takes place this weekend with more than 60,000 Queenslanders expected to participate in the Garage Sale Trail.

Minister for Environment Leeanne Enoch said there will be more than 800,000 pre-loved items up for sale at 3627 garage sales happening across Queensland.

“Queensland is generating waste faster than we are growing in population and the Garage Sale Trail is a fantastic initiative to encourage people across the nation to reuse and recycle.

“Our vision is to become a zero-waste society, which is why we brought in a Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy to encourage waste avoidance and support better resource recovery industries in our state.

“This event gives unwanted items a second lease on life preventing them from going to landfill and promotes a circular way of thinking instead of simply using and throwing things away.”

It is expected that more than four million items will be listed for sale at more than 20,000 garage sales and stalls Australia-wide.

Garage Sale Trail Co-Founder Darryl Nichols said that the Garage Sale Trail is a simple and fun way to encourage people to reuse and rethink their waste.

“The idea is simple, by putting second hand first and selling unwanted belongings or buying a pre-loved item, you’re extending the life of useful goods, taking the pressure off the world’s diminishing resources and reducing the waste headed to already crowded landfills.

“It’s a win-win situation for everyone involved – sellers get to clear out their clutter and, in the process, make some money, while shoppers get a bargain and give unwanted items a second lease on life.”

Minister Enoch said the Palaszczuk Government knows Queenslanders care about recycling and want to make a difference in waste management.

“There are some great garage sales happening across the state, from furniture sales at Logan’s Recycling Market, to the MEGA Sale of Curiosities, Collectables & Bric’a’Brac in Far North Queensland, there is something for everyone.”
