Sort Your Load Ahead Of Council’s Get Ready Tip Weekend

Council is calling on the community to sort their car, ute or trailer loads ahead of the Get Ready Tip weekend to save the environment and time spent at the tip.

Townsville Mayor Troy Thompson said as Townsville entered the high-risk weather season the community could ready their properties and head to the tip for no charge this weekend.

“With Get Ready Tip Weekend just days away we know we’ll see thousands visiting the tips at no charge, but what a lot of people don’t realise is by sorting your load when packing, you can save a significant amount of time when it comes to unloading at the tip,” Cr Thompson said.

“Not only does sorting your load correctly save time spent at Townsville transfer stations, but it also reduces the impact on the environment as you can easily separate your recyclables from your general waste.

“Every year in Townsville more than 165,000 tonnes of waste ends up in landfill.

“By taking a little bit of extra time at home and separating items like recyclables, white goods, green waste and general waste, we can make sure everything is disposed of properly.

“We have a vision for Townsville to transition towards a circular economy and move towards zero waste, we know it’s bold, but that is why we need participation from our wider community to achieve it.”

Councillor Thompson said while the no charge tipping weekend ran for four days from 8-11 November, residents dumping green waste or recyclables could visit Council’s transfer stations for no charge year-round.

“While the Get Ready Tip Weekend is a great opportunity to do a clean-up around the yard, if you’re only planning on dumping green waste or recyclables you can take these to our waste facilities at no-charge, any day,” Cr Thompson said.

“We want to thank the community for their patience if the facility they are attending is busy when they first arrive. Our crews will get you through as quickly as possible.”

Normal opening hours for Council’s five waste facilities will apply, with details available on Transfer Stations and Landfill [https://www.townsville.qld.gov.au/water-waste-and-environment/waste-and-recycling/transfer-stations].

Those residents unable to get to waste transfer stations can also access Council’s kerbside collection service. Bookings for this can be made by visiting our
