The State Government, through Lotterywest, is supporting the Shire of Harvey with a $150,000 grant towards an interpretative play space as part of the Australind (Ridley Place) Foreshore development.
Premier Mark McGowan presented the Lotterywest grant and inspected construction works, which are close to completion.
The play space which is expected to open in April will feature interpretive elements such as a balancing rope course, crustacean discovery area, mangrove tree maze, water misting feature and innovative lighting
The play area will be known as ‘Karragarup Play Space’, translated from the language of the Wardandi Noongar, meaning ‘Place of Crabs’.
This recognises the north-eastern area of the estuary was known as an important source of crab for the Wardandi Noongar people.
The play area will also feature a large crab play structure, divided into three areas representing the upper, middle and lower estuarine habitat units of the estuary, and themed to celebrate a range of flora and aquatic fauna.
Karragarup Play Space is expected to increase community participation, and awareness of the area’s natural and cultural heritage.
Australind Foreshore is the largest public open space on the Leschenault Estuary and is a major recreational resource for more than 14,000 residents of the greater Bunbury region.
The Lotterywest funding is in addition to a $100,000 State Government contribution honouring an election commitment.
Since 1991 the State Government through Lotterywest has approved 47 grants to Shire of Harvey totalling $2,964,907 inclusive of this grant.

“The play space is a wonderful investment into the future of the region and is a great display of some of our South-West highlights which attract visitors and residents alike.”

“With many young families in this area it’s vital we have an inviting space for families to visit.
“I’ve been pleased to see the progress of this fantastic project which also received $100,000 in funding as part of an election commitment and I commend the Shire of Harvey for their great work in developing and growing the region.”
As stated by Collie-Preston MLA Mick Murray:
“This facility will provide a wonderful space for locals and visitors to visit.
“Importantly it will allow local kids to get outdoors and get active, while learning about the natural environment and local heritage.”
