The southern bluefin tuna is no longer considered a threatened species. Effective management actions have resulted in strong recovery of the population.
This exciting delisting outcome is the result of management actions at home and abroad.
For over a decade, we have worked closely with international partners to address threats to the species.
The southern bluefin tuna was first listed as threatened under national environment law in 2010. Global and recreational fishing had driven down population numbers.
The species’ recovery is an example of how our nature positive work is helping protect Australia’s biodiversity. We are restoring more of what is damaged, so that native species can thrive.
We will continue to work with our international partners to protect threatened species in our ocean.
