Spare water smart items distributed to sporting clubs and community organisations

Sporting clubs and community organisations are real winners after Townsville City Council distributed leftover water smart items to more than 50 groups.

The items, which weren’t collected by residents that registered during the Water Smart Package, include lawn care packages, mulch, and tap timers.

Acting Mayor Mark Molachino said distributing the items to sporting and community organisations is a great way to use the leftover items and ensure they benefit the entire community.

“Community and sporting organisations play a vital role in the community to support residents and ensure that we are all connected – this is particularly important on the back of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Cr Molachino said.

“The items that have been distributed to these groups will allow them to improve their open spaces, parks and fields and do so in a way that uses water efficiently.

“I think it’s a great way to ensure that the items not collected are used to benefit the entire community.”

Townsville Water and Waste Committee chairperson Russ Cook said the Water Smart Package had been an overwhelming success with the allocation of packages completely exhausted.

“The items that Council has distributed to these community organisations were part of the initial Water Smart Package registrations and there happened to be leftovers that were never collected,” Cr Cook said.

“In addition to divvying out these items, Council has also begun installing over 2,000 smart water meters across the city that will allow residents to track their water consumption and monitor for consumption and water leaks.

“With the Water Smart Package and smart water meters rolled out, we can track how successful the program has been at improving our water efficiency as a city.”

The Water Smart Package is part of the $225 million 3-point water security solution funded by the Queensland Government.
