Speeding and dangerous drivers targeted during Operation Safer Speeds, NSW

Police have been left disappointed following an operation targeting speeding and dangerous drivers across NSW.

Yesterday (Thursday 14 May 2020), officers from the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command conducted Operation Safer Speeds, targeting speeding and dangerous driving offences across the state.

During the operation, a total of 2703 speeding infringement notices were issued across the state.

Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy, said the operation was focused on taking speeding motorists off our roads to minimise the risk to other road users.

“To have 2703 drivers detected speeding on our roads in a single day is shocking and needs to change,” Assistant Commissioner Corboy said.

“There are posted speed limits obvious to all on our roads, so speeding above those indicators is a sign of selfish and dangerous behaviour.

“Speeding is one of the most commonly reported factors associated with crashes, yet, few drivers view speeding as an immediate risk to their personal safety.

“There have been 118 lives lost in the first 135 days of 2020 – this is far too many people killed on our roads and needs to change.”

Incidents of note during the operation include:

  • A 30-year-old man was suspended from driving for six months and issued an infringement notice after he was allegedly detected travelling 118km/hr in a 60km/hr zone on Smithfield Road, Fairfield West, about 2.15pm yesterday.
  • About 7.20pm yesterday, officers were conducting speed enforcement duties on Bonds Road, Riverwood, when they detected a Holden Colorado utility travelling 99km/hr in a 50km/hr zone. The driver, a 31-year-old Yagoona man, was issued an infringement notice for exceed speed more than 45km/hr. His licence was also suspended.
  • Just before 9pm yesterday, Strike Force Puma officers detected a motorcycle travelling at 135km/hr in a 60km zone on The Horsley Drive at Wetherill Park. The rider, a 22-year-old male P1 Provisional rider, was issued an infringement notice. A short time later, a second motorcycle passed officers travelling at 120km/hr in a 60km/hr zone. The rider of this vehicle, a 17-year-old male learner rider, was also issued an infringement notice. Both riders also had their licences suspended.
  • Just after 8am yesterday, officers were conducting speed enforcement duties on the Pacific Highway at Harwood, when they detected a Nissan Navara utility travelling 146km/hr in an 80km/hr roadworks site. The vehicle was stopped, and officers spoke to the driver, a 41-year-old man. He was issued an infringement notice for exceed speed over 45km/hr. His licence was also suspended.
