A man was arrested for driving offences after crashing at a Port Augusta intersection overnight.
Police initially detected the BMW sedan travelling at 183 km/h in a 110 km/h zone on the Augusta Highway at Nelshaby about 12.15am on Wednesday 23 November.
The speeding vehicle was not pursued but tracked, with the assistance of patrols and other motorists, as it headed north.
Despite successfully spiking the tyres twice, the vehicle continued at speed on its run-flat tyres before eventually crashing into the kerb and a fixed red light camera at the intersection of Victoria Parade and Carlton Parade, Port Augusta just before 1am.
Police located the car abandoned at the intersection and searched the area for the driver.
The suspect was located a short distance away, again with the assistance of witnesses.
The 38-year-old Western Australian man was arrested and charged with speed dangerous, drive without due care, drive dangerously to escape pursuit, drive unlicensed and trespass. He was refused police bail and will appear in the Port Augusta Magistrates Court later today.
The BMW was towed from the scene.
Fortunately, there were no injuries sustained during this incident and police thank the public for their assistance.
