Speedsters nabbed dashing to snow

More than 50 people have been caught speeding as part of an operation by Mansfield Highway Patrol targeting road safety in the Mansfield area.

Operation Earlybird was conducted over the weekend with the assistance of Air Wing, targeting motorists travelling to Mount Stirling and Mount Buller ski fields.

Of the 60 detections, 56 were caught speeding and 15 of those were travelling at speeds that will now involve a loss of licence.

A 29-year-old Hallam man had his VW Passat wagon impounded after being caught driving at 158km/h in a 100km/h on Mount Buller Road.

Other offences included disobey information signs and overtake on single white line.

Acting Sergeant Rebecca Watkins from Mansfield HWP said the majority of those caught were travelling to the snow from Melbourne.

“It’s not just the people who are exceeding the speed limit that put themselves at risk but also other road users of being seriously injured or killed.” she said.

“Plan ahead so that you don’t need to rush to or from the snow.”

“Be patient and be safe.”
