There was fun for everyone at City of Darwin’s new $26.8 million Casuarina Aquatic and Leisure Centre when it officially opened on Saturday 13 July 2024.
Over 3,000 people attended the Family Fun Event which featured plenty of splash-tastic activities, including live entertainment, food trucks, giveaways, fun activities for the kids and a sausage sizzle thanks to Casuarina Storm Swimming Club.
Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis was excited to officially open the $26.8 million centre to community.
“We are incredibly proud of the new Casuarina Aquatic and Leisure Centre which is a modern, family-friendly facility for the whole community to enjoy,” Mr Vatskalis said.
“The centre is a world-class, dynamic community facility specially designed for people of all ages to use and enjoy.
“It has three sparkling pools, including an 8 lane, 50-metre pool, a temperature-controlled, 6 lane 25-metre learn to swim pool and a resort-style lagoon pool featuring an aqua tower, fountains and water squirts.
“We have specifically designed the centre to ensure it has increased accessibility, including zero-depth access to all pools and equal access to amenities, buildings, playgrounds and open play and recreation areas.
“If you don’t want to get wet, the centre also has a large, grassed area, 3 x 3 basketball court and a dry play area featuring a unique sensory dome, the first of its kind in the Northern Territory,” he said.
The Casuarina Aquatic and Leisure Centre was jointly funded by City of Darwin who contributed $19.3 million and the Federal Government who contributed $7.5 million.
The Casuarina Aquatic and Leisure Centre is City of Darwin’s flagship infrastructure project and realises the Council’s goal of developing a capital city with best practice and sustainable infrastructure.
