Blacktown City Council’s outstanding service to sport has been recognised after it was named Council of the Year at the Sport NSW Community Sports Awards.
Council’s top quality venues and community partnership programs were key to the triumph at the awards night this month.
The opening of the Blacktown Exercise Sports and Technology Hub (BEST), the upgrade of Kevin Betts Stadium at Mount Druitt for wheelchair sports, and a partnership with Western Sydney University researching the state of inclusive sport were just some achievements in the past 12 months.
Council has partnered with groups including Sport NSW, Wheelchair Sports NSW/ACT and government agencies to maximise the benefit of its programs to the community.
The recent 41st Blacktown City Sports Awards, which promote the achievements of sportspeople and volunteers, received a record number of nominations.
Council has consistently excelled in delivering for community sport, having received the same Sport NSW honour in 2023 and 2021. It was a finalist in 2022.
Blacktown City Mayor Brad Bunting said the 2024 honour was a credit to keenly dedicated staff.
“Blacktown City is the sporting capital of Western Sydney,” he said.
“Council is providing top notch venues and programs that help the community make the most of its passion for sport.
“Everyone deserves the opportunity to participate to the best of their ability and enjoy a healthy, active lifestyle.”
Sport NSW is a longstanding non-profit group representing the sports industry and its awards are contested by councils, groups and individuals from across the state.
