Sports Capacity Plan: addressing sports field congestion

26 June 2019

At its Council Meeting on Tuesday 25 June 2019, Mornington Peninsula Shire Council adopted the Sports Capacity Plan 2019.

The Shire is responsible for planning, development and management of 34 sports reserves, comprising of 52 sports field and associated supporting infrastructure.

Increased participation means many existing sports fields are overused, the Sports Capacity Plan aims to alleviate this by recommending infrastructure improvements, shared use agreements and additional sports fields.

The Plan seeks to respond to a rapid increase in participation in sport in recent years, particularly female and junior involvement in field-based sports such as soccer and Australian rules football.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor David Gill said “sport is a way of life for most of us on the Peninsula, therefore we need to ensure that all residents have access to high quality sustainable sporting facilities.

“Our fields are mostly used year-round for both winter and summer sports across a variety of age groups, so it’s important we enhance and improve many of these fields.

“The Plan acknowledges a broad range of projects ranging from the development of new green field sites through to localised drainage, irrigation and lighting upgrade projects.

“Importantly, the Plan distinguishes areas in the Shire that will grow in the future and makes recommendations about the future sports fields required for these areas,” concluded Councillor Gill.
