Sports fans and local businesses have come together in a show of support for the Together Tweed Mayoral Flood Appeal 2022.
A sportsman’s lunch, organised by Tweed Heads Plumbing Supplies (THPS) and held at Kingscliff Beach Bowls Club recently, raised $8,500 for the appeal.
To date, the appeal has raised more than $68,700.
The fundraiser was the brainchild of THPS director Gary Shaw who wanted to assist those who had been hit hard by the floods.
A host of Tweed and Gold Coast businesses generously provided goods and services for raffles and the Gold Coast Titans and the Gold Coast Suns (provided by Austworld) donated items to a well-supported sports memorabilia auction.
Radio host and former AFL player Spida Everett hosted the event while former Australian Test cricketer Greg Ritchie provided the entertainment, ensuring the afternoon was a great success.
The flood appeal seeks to raise funds to offer affected Tweed communities and residents immediate help, support recovery efforts and resilience to future flood events and contribute to addressing significant long-term issues such as housing.
Mayor of Tweed Chris Cherry was extremely grateful for the community contribution organised by Tweed Heads Plumbing Supplies.
“I would sincerely like to thank Gary and his team for their fundraising effort, it was incredible,” Cr Cherry said.
“It was wonderful to see the business community and sports supporters come together to assist our Mayoral Flood Appeal.”
The Together Tweed Mayoral Flood Appeal 2022 remains open for donations with the intent to support recipients as funds continue to roll in.
Council resolved to distribute up to $20,000 to the Murwillumbah Community Centre for the purchase of a new bus, and up to $20,000 towards vital communications equipment for isolated communities in the Tweed.
Thanks to the funds raised so far, both of these donations can be made in full. Council resolved that the balance of funds will be distributed equally between The Family Centre, the Northern Rivers Community Foundation (NRCF) and local units of the NSW State Emergency Service (SES).
The Family Centre will use the funds to support children, families and young people impacted by the floods. The NRCF will award grants to help community organisations work in the early, medium and long term phases of the flood recovery. And the SES will use the funds to recruit, train and develop volunteers for local units to build its capacity to respond to future emergencies.
