Spotlight On: Charlie Rule

In this edition of ‘Spotlight On,’ Young Matilda Charlie Rule talks about how bonding off the field, helps performance on it.

Q1: Tell us about your football journey?

A: I grew up in the eastern suburbs around Bondi and started playing football when I was five and was put into a boys’ team at Queens Park. I was inspired after seeing my older brother play, he’s been a big influence on me. Playing against him in the backyard, I always wanted to beat him and I think that’s where I got my determination and commitment from.

Q2: How would you describe your playing style?

A: I hate losing so I’ve always got that driving me to push myself as far as possible in a game. On the field I think I can come across as cheeky and aggressive.

Q3: How would you describe yourself off the pitch?

A: Off the field I’m the opposite, I think people would describe me as chill and mellow. I like to have as much fun as I can, but when I step onto the field, it’s totally different. I think it’s good having that balance because even within the team, when we’re not competing, we’re always having fun together and that’s what builds a good team environment, being able to connect off the field as well, is really bonding.
