The Great Barrier Reef was inscribed on the World Heritage List for its unique natural attributes and enormous scientific and environmental importance.

These are characteristics that it maintains today.

The Reef is an international icon. It is a renowned tourist attraction and one of the world’s most unique and biologically diverse natural environments.

The Reef covers an area of 348,000 square kilometres. It is so large it can be seen from space.

Australia has increased its actions and investments to better address threats to the Reef and help build its resilience.

We are also working constructively and closely with

our international partners to protect the of the Reef and all our World Heritage properties.
