Spring Entrance Ceremonies 2024

The 2024 Tokyo Tech Spring Entrance Ceremonies were held on April 3, 2024 at Ookayama Campus. New bachelor’s program students were welcomed into the community in the morning, while master’s and doctoral program students were celebrated in the afternoon.

These were the final Tokyo Tech entrance ceremonies before the merger between Tokyo Institute of Technology and Tokyo Medical and Dental University, and the formation of Institute of Science Tokyo, in October 2024.

This spring, 1163 bachelor’s program students, 1629 master’s program students, 24 professional master’s program students, and 313 doctoral program students were admitted to the Institute. Of these students, 362 joined Tokyo Tech from abroad.

Participating in the entrance ceremonies were President Kazuya Masu, members of the board, deans, directors, Tokyo Tech Alumni Association President Kiyoto Ido (Class of 1972, Mathematics, School of Science), and alumna Ayumi Shigitani, executive chairman of Tokyo Gas i Net Corp. (Class of 1987, Industrial Engineering and Management, Graduate School of Science and Engineering).

Guardians, family members, and friends of Tokyo Tech’s newest students also arrived on campus to enjoy this special day. Those who could not find a space in the Sports Arena were invited to watch the ceremonies from the 70th Anniversary Auditorium and the Multi-Purpose Digital Hall.

The ceremonies began with the Tokyo Tech Orchestra and Chor Kleines, the Institute’s choral group and official student club, leading all attendees in the singing of the Tokyo Tech Song.

After this, Masu delivered his warm words of welcome to the students and their families. During his address, the president emphasized the latest Tokyo Tech developments, which aim to create new pathways and support systems for the Institute’s increasingly diverse student population. At both ceremonies, the president called the audience’s attention to the one last time. “The swallow by the window symbolizes the Institute as a hub of technical innovation from which the windows of the world open up to its members. You are now peering in this window, perhaps seeking new experiences, knowledge, and guidance. I am confident that we will provide these to you. So don’t hold back. Begin your active Tokyo Tech journey from today and take full advantage of the opportunities that lie ahead of you,” Masu said.

Alumni Ido and Shigitani also gave brief speeches to encourage the new students at the start of their Tokyo Tech journeys.

At each ceremony, a student representative spoke on behalf of their cohort about their ambitions and goals as members of Tokyo Tech. In the morning, Shuma Sase from the School of Computing delivered a message in front of other bachelor’s program students. In the afternoon, Kanon Hasegawa from the Department of Chemical Science and Engineering at the School of Materials and Chemical Technology shared their thoughts with fellow master’s and doctoral students.
