Following the completion of the first stage of major conservation works, Goulburn Mulwaree Council is pleased to announce the re-opening of St Clair Villa for one weekend only.
In conjunction with History Goulburn, the long-term tenants of the building, Council will re-open St Clair on the weekend of 18-19 November. Closed since 2017, this will be a chance for the community to visit for the first time or reacquaint themselves with this important 1840s State Heritage Listed property at 318 Sloane Street Goulburn.
Goulburn Mulwaree Council Mayor Walker said “The $1.26M stage one conservation works and the investment from Goulburn Mulwaree Council and the NSW Government recognise the architectural and historical significance of this property. There is still work to do, and the stage two works will continue to conserve St Clair, ensuring it is available for many generations to come.
History Goulburn through their efforts at St Clair have played a significant role in telling the stories and memories of Goulburn as an important meeting place and City. We look forward to their return to St Clair for this open weekend, and into the future following the completion of the second stage of conservation works”.
President of History Goulburn, Jennifer Lamb said “Although the conservation is not completed, History Goulburn is delighted to have a ‘soft’ opening of St Clair. All rooms will be open for viewing the ongoing conservation of this historic villa. In ten rooms there will be just a few key items from History Goulburn’s substantial collection of Goulburn district objects that will reflect on aspects of Goulburn’s rich history.
St Clair has witnessed and participated in Goulburn’s history since 1840 – she looks her age but that is her charm. It is hoped that the Goulburn community will relish the opportunity to experience history being conserved at St Clair.
History Goulburn is extremely grateful for the dedication and work of Goulburn Mulwaree Council to the conservation of St Clair; undoubtedly, the community at large will be equally grateful. History Goulburn also appreciates the support of Museums and Galleries of NSW and Council in assisting with the interpretation of its collection for presentation in St Clair.
During the stage one conservation works, major structural and remediation works have been undertaken, including critical repairs, new roof and drainage, subfloor ventilation, asbestos removal, mould, and moisture remediation works, access, fire, and electrical upgrades throughout.
