The Festival is proudly presented by City of Port Phillip and will feature an extensive short film program with 13 screening sessions and programming at Port Phillip venues including The Astor Theatre in St Kilda, which will also play host to the Festival’s much-anticipated Opening Night event on Friday 27 May.
Following the popularity of the online sessions hosted in the last two years, enjoyed by more than 32,000 online viewers in 2021, this year’s Festival will be held in a hybrid format, with the return of physical events and screenings to be complemented by online programming to reach broader audiences.
Successful filmmakers in this year’s Festival will share in $20,000 in prizes across multiple categories and stand among some impressive alumni. As one of only four accredited Academy Award qualifying events in Australia, previous SKFF entrants have gone on to win major prizes at international festivals.
Shorts have been developed into features and many memorable names in the Australian film industry have forged their path through SKFF. This includes past SKFF award winner and Melbourne filmmaker Greig Fraser, who recently took home an Oscar for Best Cinematography for his work on the blockbuster film Dune.
Highlights of this year’s program will include:
– Australia’s Top Short Film Competition with a selection of the best new Australian short films
– Under the Radar, the annual youth short film competition plus the VCE student film showcase
– The Big Picture, the Festival’s annual filmmaker development program for aspiring and emerging filmmakers and film students.
SKFF is supported by major government partners Screen Australia and VicScreen.
