St Peters Street upgrade moves to next stage

The concept plan for St Peters Street has been placed on community consultation.

The draft concept plan focuses on the section of St Peters Street from First Avenue through to Eighth Avenue and includes a viewing deck overlooking St Peters Billabong.

Mayor Robert Bria said: “Over the last ten years, the Council has invested significantly in the revitalisation of the St Peters precinct, including upgrades to Dunstone Grove and Linde Reserve, the establishment of the St Peters Civic Plaza and Avenue of Honour and the redevelopment of St Peters Library and town hall.

“The dedication of the St Peters Heroes on the Soldier’s Memorial in April this year also reinforced the importance of the street as Council’s ANZAC Avenue of Honour.

“The revitalisation has established a strong identity within the precinct, and seen an increase in the appeal of the area for both residents and visitors. This next stage of upgrades forms the final component of this significant precinct.”

The upgrade is good news for cyclists and pedestrians, as it includes widened footpaths, the introduction of crossings at intersections along the street, and a redesign of the junction at the Eighth Avenue/St Peters Street intersection, increasing accessibility and safety along the street.

The Council is also committed to improving flood protection and the upgrade will include the integration of new rain gardens as well as seasonal stormwater detention at Cliff Goodwin Reserve, to protect against localised flooding.
