We’re calling for people of all ages, backgrounds, and experience to apply for our 2024 program of cadets, apprentices, and trainees – our CATs program!
Wollongong City Council employs more than 1100 staff who provide quality services and facilities to the Wollongong community. Each year, we advertise for CAT positions. These roles are learning roles and they provide people with on-the-job experience as they complete further education.
This year’s opportunities are:
Building Surveyor Cadet – you’ll join our Development Assessment and Compliance Division and will work to become job-ready for future employment as a Building Surveyor.
Cyber Security Cadet – you’ll learn how to monitor IMT security systems, complete security compliance audits and reviews, vulnerability assessments and how to analyse cyber security risk.
Librarian Cadet (identified for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples) – you’ll learn how to help people find information, access library and community resources and participate in the organisation of community events.
Business Administration Trainee – you’ll learn about administrative support across a number of employee activities such as recruitment, training, HR systems and managing queries.
Arborist Trainee – you’ll help maintain our city’s tree canopy and learn all aspects of working in the arboriculture industry.
Geotech Trainee – you’ll help us design, construct and maintain roads, bridges, and buildings. This is a physical hands-on role with a mix of indoor and outdoor work.
Horticulturalist Trainee – you’ll help maintain Council’s community parks, Wollongong Botanic Garden, and sports fields, while learning all aspects of working in the horticulture industry.
Plant and Vehicle Mechanic Apprentice – we’ll equip you with the skills to repair and maintain a wide range of plan and equipment such as cars, trucks, loaders and excavators.
What is it like working at Wollongong City Council?
Wollongong City Council General Manager Greg Doyle said that cadet, apprentice, and trainee roles are a great way for people to get hands-on experience, something that would put them ahead of the competition when applying for jobs.
“Council is committed to building an educated community, with an innovative and sustainable economy. One of the ways we’re working towards this vision is by upskilling the workforce of tomorrow,” Mr Doyle said.
“We want to employ excellent, passionate people who care about their community and their work. At the same time, we recognise that there are many pathways to achieving a career. That’s why we’re offering a variety of educational opportunities including cadetships, apprenticeships and traineeships to meet the different education needs of each position.
“I encourage people of all ages and backgrounds to check out the available positions. Many of our cadets, apprentices and trainees have gone on to have long and successful careers at Council and, importantly, these opportunities are not just for recent school leavers, but for people who may be mid-career and ready for a change.”
Applications for all cadetships close 11.59pm on Sunday 22 October. Apprenticeships and traineeships close 11.59pm on Sunday 29 October.
