State and Federal partnership driving social housing outcomes in Western Sydney

NSW Gov

The NSW Government is seeking a Community Housing Provider (CHP) to deliver 65 new homes across 3 sites in Western Sydney dedicated to social, affordable and key worker housing.

Minister for Housing and ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾lessness Rose Jackson said the $32 million development project would deliver new homes for over 100 people in need in North Parramatta. The project will be supported by a direct investment by the NSW Government, as well as funding through the Federal Government’s ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Housing Finance and Investment Corporation (NHFIC).

“The housing crisis is real and growing, and it’s only through innovative partnerships like this one, which leverages the expertise of the community housing sector and vital Commonwealth funding, that we’ll deliver more social and affordable housing sooner,” Ms Jackson said.

“This is a strong step in the right direction, but there is a lot of work to be done to ensure we are delivering more and better housing for those in need and our essential workers.

“We’re wasting no time in identifying new ways to build more homes to take care of the people who take care of us and provide a safe and secure home for those who need it most.”

The NSW Land and Housing Corporation (LAHC) is seeking proposals from CHPs to develop 3 sites on Irving Street, Collett Parade and Pennant Street about 3 kilometres from the Parramatta CBD. The 2 sites are vacant and ready for construction to commence with a development application in progress for the third site.

The successful CHP will need to deliver a minimum of 40% social, 40% affordable and 20% other rental housing supporting up to 147 jobs for tradespeople.

Housing Minister Julie Collins said she was committed to ensuring more Australians have a safe and affordable place to call home.

“We are not wasting a day when it comes to addressing Australia’s housing challenges and making sure more Australians have a safe and affordable place to call home,” she said.

“We now have new projects underway across the country, and across NSW, thanks to our decision to unlock funding for more social and affordable rental housing.

“We could do even more if the Senate backs our $10 billion Housing Australia Future Fund – the single biggest investment in social and affordable rental housing by a federal government in more than a decade.

Community Housing Industry Association (CHIA) NSW Chief Executive Officer Mark Degotardi said it was a strong endorsement of the community housing sector and its critical role.

“CHPs are focused on delivering affordable and diverse housing where it’s needed most, and this project confirms that government recognises the expertise and key role our sector plays in delivering better housing outcomes for the community,” Mr Degotardi said.

Works are expected to start early in the new year on 2 of the 3 North Parramatta sites with the third to commence following development approval.
