State Budget delivering major $35 million revitalisation of Perth Cultural Centre

  • McGowan Government commits further $15 million from 2022-23 State Budget to revitalise Perth Cultural Centre (PCC)
  • New funding in addition to the $20 million of joint State-Commonwealth investment
  • Additional investment will deliver an expanded redevelopment of the precinct, as outlined in the PCC Masterplan
  • Project will help connect WA Museum Boola Bardip, Art Gallery of Western Australia, State Library and State Theatre Centre, and provide a boost for Northbridge and CBD
  • Project to create local jobs, support tourism and provide benefits for the hospitality industry
  • The Perth Cultural Centre (PCC) will undergo a $35 million redevelopment and rejuvenation, with the McGowan Government’s 2022-23 State Budget allocating $15 million of additional funding to expand the Perth City Deal project.

The additional funding brings the State Government’s contribution to $25 million and will deliver an expanded redevelopment of the precinct, as outlined in the PCC Masterplan.

The Commonwealth Government is contributing $10 million as part of the $1.7 billion Perth City Deal.

The project will see the PCC transformed into a connected, thriving and welcoming precinct that connects the major cultural institutions in the area.

It includes the development of a new broad and shady central space to provide the precinct with a new focal point.

The works will also include the demolition of the amphitheatre and development of a more accessible, graded streetscape.

At the eastern end of the PCC, an Art Gallery of Western Australia (AGWA) car park will be demolished to introduce better connections to Beaufort Street and create a new children’s play place.

The project will deliver enhanced lighting and security, open up under-utilised spaces, and create a better environment for families and tourists visiting the area.

The works will deliver much of the vision outlined in the PCC Masterplan, which was released today after a lengthy consultation process and detailed consideration by the Cultural Precinct Taskforce.

The PCC Masterplan is available at

As stated by Culture and the Arts Minister David Templeman:

“The McGowan Government’s commitment to this project will see the PCC transformed into a more vibrant, welcoming and accessible place for Western Australians and tourists alike.

“This additional State Government funding means we can deliver on more of the vision outlined in the precinct’s masterplan, providing a major boost to the overall redevelopment.

“Over the past five years, we have delivered the magnificent new WA Museum Boola Bardip and the AGWA rooftop. This project will help marry the PCC’s cultural institutions in a way that combines safety, ambience and fun.

“By sensibly managing the State Budget, the McGowan Government has been able to invest in job-creating projects like this to set WA up for the future.”

As stated by Perth MLA John Carey:

“This is another great project funded by the McGowan Government that will increase vibrancy, improve safety and drive activation in the city.

“I worked on the Cultural Precinct Taskforce and recognise the importance of creating a safer and more accessible space for families and tourists.

“Together with the construction of the Edith Cowan University City campus, this will help bring more people into the city to enjoy our cultural institutions and create the hum that all great cities have.”

As stated by Perth Cultural Centre Taskforce Chair Jessica Shaw:

“I am so pleased to see the PCC Masterplan released and funded after so much work was undertaken by the team.

“The transformation of the PCC will have economic, cultural, safety and environmental impacts that will be felt for generations to come.”
