State Government backs Charter Boat Fishery

The Marshall Liberal Government is aiming to strengthen the local charter boat sector after significant declines in passenger numbers in recent years.

Under the previous government there has been a 39 per cent decrease in boat passengers between 2011 and 2017.

The State Government has launched a consultation paper on a revised Charter Boat Fishery Management Plan which seeks to grow the potential of tourism in the industry.

Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development said the charter boat sector was an important South Australian industry that requires a strong plan for the future.

“We have a significant charter boat industry in South Australia, worth $11.2 million in 2015-16,” said Minister Whetstone.

“Under the proposed plan, Primary Industries and Regions SA would work with industry and relevant organisations to explore strategies that support tourism in the charter boat sector.

“This revision is part of the mid-term review of the plan, and includes some new proposals to help revitalise the Charter Boat Fishery in South Australia and take advantage of opportunities to diversify.

“We want to make South Australia a destination for recreational fishing and this includes a strong and vibrant experience provided by the charter boat industry.

“I encourage every interested person to jump onto the PIRSA website to read the consultation paper, and provide their feedback.”

Neil MacDonald, Executive Officer of the Surveyed Charter Boat Owners and Operators Association, said the charter boat fishing industry would continue to work with government to look at ways to increase the profitability of the industry.

“The revised plan allows for some positive developments in the industry, and we look forward to further collaboration with the government help the Charter Boat Fishery continue to provide a platform for clients wishing to experience the great fishing opportunities that South Australia has to offer,” said Mr MacDonald.

Submissions on the draft plan and summary document are due by 5pm, Friday 21 December 2018.
