A Matt Guy Liberals and ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾s Government will provide $5.5 million towards a new state-of-the-art Hobsons Bay Wetlands Centre.
The sustainability-focused centre will be a premier destination for the local community and a significant tourism drawcard for those wanting to access the internationally recognised Cheetham Wetlands.
Hobsons Bay Wetlands Centre will also provide immersive teaching and learning from Prep to PhD, with dedicated classrooms and research facilities.
The Hobsons Bay wetlands support critical eco-systems of diverse flora and fauna, with more than 150 species of birds, frogs and the rare Altona Skipper Butterfly calling the wetlands home.
In addition to nurturing the critical habitat, the area could be enhanced for visitors through the development of walking tracks, boardwalks, nature play areas and more.
The project will support more than 40 full time jobs through the design and construction phase, utilising locally sourced materials where possible.
Leader of the Liberal Party, Matt Guy, said the new build would teach the next generation the importance of conservation.
“An integral part of the Wetlands Centre is its capacity to host school children and teach them about the natural habitats and native species,” Mr Guy said.
“Thousands of species call the wetlands home, and with the construction of this important centre, they will be able to do so for years to come.”
Liberal Candidate for Point Cook, Angela Newhouse, said the Hobsons Bay Wetlands Centre would be a big win for the community.
“This is such a fantastic project for the entire area, and only the Liberals and ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾s will ensure that the wetlands continue to thrive,” Mrs Newhouse said.
“I am proud to deliver this commitment alongside Matt Guy, and support Hobsons Bay Council in delivering this important local project.”
Liberal Candidate for Williamstown, Daria Kellander, said the Hobsons Bay Wetlands Centre would cement the south-western suburbs as an important environmental hub.
“This is a great announcement for the community and only a Matt Guy Liberals and ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾s Government will ensure this local project gets done.”
