The Albanese Government thanks Mr David Anderson, Managing Director of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) for his assured leadership of one of Australia’s most important institutions.
In a career spanning more than three decades after joining the ABC in 1989 – Mr Anderson has been at the forefront of significant changes at the ABC and in the media industry.
This includes the transformation of the ABC into a modern broadcasting and digital media organisation, that provides trusted content, which reflects Australia’s diverse culture and identity.
Prior to his appointment as Managing Director, Mr Anderson worked across the organisation in a range of roles, including television production, entertainment and radio, digital platforms, and corporate strategy.
Mr Anderson led the ABC admirably during a tumultuous time that included budget cuts and the COVID-19 pandemic, and through it all upheld the ABC’s independence and integrity.
The ABC has announced that the Mr Anderson will step down early next year, after six years of service in the role of Managing Director. Under the Australian Broadcasting Corporation Act 1983, the ABC Board is responsible for appointing the Managing Director. The Government understands Mr Anderson will remain in the role until the Board appoints his successor, ensuring continuity and stability during this time.
The Managing Director, alongside the Board of the ABC, plays a key role in ensuring the ABC fulfils its to contribute to a sense of national identity and inform and entertain, reflect the cultural diversity of the Australian community, and help educate Australians.
