Statement on Ian Tuxworth

On behalf of the Northern Territory Government and Territorians, I express sincere condolences to the family of former Northern Territory Chief Minister, Ian Tuxworth who passed away yesterday.

Mr Tuxworth was a member of the Northern Territory’s first Ministry following the declaration of Self Government in 1978 and served as the Northern Territory’s second Chief Minister from October 1984 to May 1986.

Mr Tuxworth was elected as a member for the electoral division of Barkly of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly at its inaugural election in 1974 and went on to represent the electorate for the next 16 years. Following his resignation as Chief Minister and leader of the CLP in 1986, Mr Tuxworth founded the NT ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾s Party and continued to represent the Barkly in this capacity until the 1990 election.

Having grown up in Tennant Creek, Mr Tuxworth was a popular and highly-regarded local member and a devoted Territorian whose passion, unrelenting advocacy and valuable political contribution has helped to shape, strengthen and define the Northern Territory.

Our deepest sympathy to his wife Ruth and his family.
