Statement On Independent Stewards Panel Report

Tasmanian Government

The Tasmanian Government welcomes the release of the full, unredacted Report by the Independent Stewards Panel following an investigation into matters raised in the Murrihy Report.

Minister for Racing, Jane Howlett, said the Report represents the next step in restoring faith and rebuilding trust in Tasmania’s racing industry.

“This is a legally robust and thorough Report that makes substantial findings of unacceptable behaviour and actions,” Minister Howlett said.

“I am appalled and quite frankly, disgusted, at the findings and I am pleased action has now been taken.

“As Minister, I demand a Tasmanian racing industry where people care for their animals and participate with integrity in this important industry that supports so many jobs and so many small businesses out there in communities across rural and regional Tasmania.

“We want to ensure Tasmania’s racing industry thrives, we want the industry to be made up of fit and proper persons, and we want a racing industry where animal welfare and racing integrity are paramount.

“As I’ve said many times, the overwhelming majority of participants in the industry do the right thing and, together, we will keep working to ensure that all three codes of racing thrive – across Tasmania.”

The Tasmanian Government is implementing the biggest reforms in racing for decades, with a new racing regulation and integrity legislative framework with strong new powers to set the bar higher for the industry.

Minister Howlett thanked Mr Brown and Panel members Larry Wilson and Barry Delaney for the work undertaken.

The Independent Stewards Panel made three recommendations, and work is already underway on all of them.
